After the European Qualifying rounds, the names of the 18 young surfers who have qualified for the European Final have finally been determined. Every one of them participated in the national qualification stages with the sole aim of booking their place in this final. Two wildcards will also be given for participation in the final. One has been allocated to a French rider from team Quiksilver, Aldric God, aged 15, who finished 3rd in the qualification event at Capbreton. It will be his second time taking part in the European Final. The second wildcard will be determined by a course of trials on the first day of the competition. 5 young stars will challenge each other for a place in the final.

This year, the European King of the Groms Final will be sponsored by Team Quiksilver rider, Vasco Ribeiro, 3rd in the International Final in 2010. The rising star of Portuguese surfing will share his experience in this competition with the young surfers and support them during the event at his favourite spots.

Competition will be tough. On offer for the 2 finalists at this European Final will be a ticket for the International Final that will take place during the Quiksilver Pro France, from the 27th September to the 8th October this year. There they will rub shoulders with the sport’s world elite, Kelly Slater, Jeremy Flores, Dane Reynolds… on the Basque-Landes beaches.

Ayumu Hirano & Kelly Clark Take Top Spots At The Burton High Fives Halfpipe Finals

The first annual Burton ‘High Fives’ snowboarding competition, presented by MINI, concluded today at Snow Park NZ in Wanaka, New Zealand with the climactic 5Star halfpipe finals. Burton riders, Kelly Clark (USA) and Ayumu Hirano (JPN), took home US $10,000 each for their impressive winning performances in the pipe.

It was another beautiful ‘bluebird’ day at Snow Park NZ for the halfpipe finals. Women were up first in the pipe for the exciting one-hour jam session. Kelly Clark (USA) and second place rider Queralt Castellet (ESP) took it to a whole new level in women’s pipe as they duked it out for the top spot run. In the end it was Kelly’s incredible second run that took the win with 94.60, starting with a frontside 9, backside 5, front 7, cab 7 and stalefish. Queralt’s third run was a stunning series of spins, opening with a front 5, back 9, front 9, back 5, and a frontside 10 to finish for 92.40 points. Rounding out the podium with a score of 75.40 was USA’s Kaitlyn Farrington whose solid run consisted of a backside 5, stale, crail, corked front 7, cab 7, and backside alley-oop 5.

“The girls rode really great today and Queralt and I were run for run throughout,“ said Kelly. “But in the end I was really happy with my riding and it was so much fun to be putting down 9’s and 10’s in the summertime.”

The men’s halfpipe finals were dominated by the Japanese riders whose sky high boosts lead to the top two podium spots. Leading the charge was none other than 13-year old Ayumu Hirano (JPN), who laid down the gauntlet with his first run. In the end he was theonly rider to top his own score with a 92.40 run that consisted of a frontside air, front 10, cab 10, front double, and crazy alley-oop rodeo 5. Ayumu’s talent showed through in spades earlier this year at the Burton US Open in March where his winning score in the Junior Jam broke all records. Last year’s Burton NZO winner, Ryo Aono (JPN), claimed second place today with 89.60, starting his run with a front 10 lein, cab 10 melon, front 9 lein, and back 9 lein. At one point it looked like it might be a clean sweep for the Japanese riders, but Greg Bretz (USA) put down a solid run for 88.60 points, nudgingKohei Kudo (JPN) off the podium for third place. Greg’s run started with a front 10 tail, cab 10 nose, front 9 lein, back 9 tail, and a front 10 double cork.

“I am so stoked to have placed first today in my third run of the jam at the Burton High Fives,” said Hirano. “I am now ready to go even bigger in my next competition.”

Prize money today totalled US $35,000 for the Halfpipe at this 5Star World Snowboard Tour event. The 2012 Burton High Fives has dished out a total prize purse of US $80,000 – the largest to date in New Zealand snow sports history.

The halfpipe awards ceremony was as unique as the Burton High Fives itself, complete with boardgiveaways and live sheep. It was followed by the High Fives Sunset Sessions on the sun-drenched deck at the Woolshed at Snow Park NZ, featuring Dudstown Soundsystem. The entertainment will continue later this evening with the High Fives Closing Party at Opium Bar in Wanaka, alsofeaturing Dudstown Soundsystem.

The 2012 Burton High Fives is the first event in the Burton Global Event Series and is a 5star event on the World Snowboard Tour. A special thanks to High Five partners MINI, Nokia, Red Bull, Snow Park NZ, Jagermeister, Juice TV, Skinny Mobile, The Edge, Stoke Lager, and Mighty Campervans.

Mikkel Bang & Enni Rukajarvi Win Burton High Fives Slopestyle

The first annual Burton ‘High Fives’ snowboarding competition, presented by MINI, continued today at Snow Park NZ in Wanaka with the exciting Slopestyle Finals. Taking first place and walking away $USD $10,000 richer each, were Burton riders Mikkel Bang (NOR) and Enni Rukajarvi (FIN).

60 of the top snowboarders in the world have experienced a snowboarding event like no other in New Zealand this week as the Burton High Fives combined traditional snowboarding eventswith unique off-snow team challenges. The first two days of the event saw the riders taking part in a variety of Kiwi-influenced challenges including skeet shooting, knife throwing and jet boat racing, just to name a few. The athletes also took to the driving track for the MINI Countryman Winter Driving Challenge where the fastest teams got the advantage of selecting the order for halfpipe and slopestyle. With the first two days of off-snow team challenges now completed, the action today shifted back toSnow Park NZ and the world-class slopestyle course.

Under sunny skies, the women were first up in the slopestyle finals. The Burton High Fives’ jam format allowed each rider to get four runs, which lead to an exciting competition for the women. Burton’s Enni Rukajarvi’s (FIN) impressive third run scored her an 83.80 with an indy air, boardslide, frontside 3 indy, back 5, cab 5, and stale. Local New Zealand rider Christy Prior felt right at home nailing second place in her final run with 78.20. Her solid run consisted of an ollie, backside lipslide, front 3 tailtap, front rodeo 7, back 3, and backside air. Ty Walker (USA) came in third in her final run with 77.00. She locked in the final podium spot with a run that included a 50/50, lipslide, front 3 tailtap, frontside 3, back 7, and a method.

Burton rider Mikkel Bang (NOR) was the clear standout throughout the men’s competition as he took the lead right off the bat with his first run score of 91.00 – only to top it on his second run with 95.40 points. Mikkel’s winning run started out with a switch backside 1, front 270, back 5, switch back 12, front 10 double, and a backside rodeo 5 stale over the final hip jump.

For the rest of the men’s field it was a matter of catch up, and it all came down to their final runs as top riders leap-frogged each other for the remaining podium spots. Sebastien Toutant (CAN) busted into second place with 94.00 points, courtesy of a back 3, frontblunt sameways 270, front 3 tail, back 10 double, front 10 double, and double back rodeo to finish. Taking third place with 92.00 points was Stale Sandbech (NOR), his run started with a 50/50 front 1 close out, hardways 270, cab 5,front 10, back 14, and alley oop.

Prize money today totalled US $35,000, with the same amount on the table again for tomorrow’s halfpipe finals. While competing for individual results in slopestyle, riders were also representing 12 teams selected earlier in the week for the off-snow challenges. Points from those challenges will be combined with points from today’s slopestyle and tomorrow’s halfpipe rankings, and the top team will walk away with an additional US $10,000 to split between them. The total prize purse of US $80,000 is the largest to date in New Zealand snow sports history.

The Burton High Fives will wrap up tomorrow with the halfpipe finals so be sure to check the live webcast on http://www.worldsnowboardtour.com/events/high-fives-0 starting at 10:15am New Zealand standard time.

The 2012 Burton High Fives is the first event in the Burton Global Event Series and is a 5star event on the World Snowboard Tour.
freestyle.ch in St. Gallen?

Mens podium! 1. Stef Zeestraten 2. Yuki Kadono 3. Sven Thorgren

Stef Zeestraten & Christy Prior Win Billabong Bro Down 2012

(Snow Park, NZ) Saturday, August 4th, 2012: Local Wanaka rider, Stef Zeestraten (NZL), 27, has defeated a field of more than 50 international riders to claim the Open Men’s division of the Billabong Bro Down presented by Xperia Sony Smartphone 4Star World Snowboard Tour event which wrapped up at Snow Park, New Zealand today.

Stef Zeestraten throwing a switch back double 10 to end his winning run! Photo: JMac

Zee’s winning run was the very first of the final, the local favorite registering 79.30 points from the judges. He began with a gnarly cab 270 gap to the down rail, followed by a frontside 720, a backside 900, switch backside double cork 1080 and a switch 50-50 on the final feature which Zee said he was “actually surprised” he landed.

“Good times! It was a fun event, I’m stoked to ride away and stoked to ride with some solid riders, the boys were killing it so I’m happy to be a part of that,” said Zeestraten.

Zee now has 500 valuable World Tour ranking points next to his name, US$5,000 in prize money and a swag of prizes that included a state-of-the-art NEXF3 single lens kit camera Sony Camera.

2nd place Yuki Kadono during mens finals. Photo: JMac

Japanese rider Yuki Kadono (JPN) was second on the final start list and the 16 year-old answered back immediately, locking in the second highest scoring run of the final 78.20 points (petrol pump tap, frontside lipslide to fakie, cab 540 underflip, front 1080 tail grab, back double 1080 and a nice little 50-50 frontside 540 to wrap up the run). But as happy as Kadono was, the score fell a little short, coming in behind Zee by just over a point.

World Rookie Champion Sven Thorgren came in 3rd place in mens finals. Photo: JMac

Defending Billabong Bro Down Champion Roope Tonteri of Finland landed his run no problem, but fell just shy of the top spot on the judges sheet by two points. Three days of riding into a 90-day stint in New Zealand and competing in his first event of 35 scheduled in his itinerary, Tonteri has a long season ahead with plenty to look forward to.

“It’s early in the season for me and I know who is going to pay tonight at the bar, so no problem,” he joked.

Womens podium! 1. Christy Prior 2. Shelly Gotlieb 3. Panka Gyarmati

Today’s result is a personal best for Open Women’s Division winner, Christy Prior (Auckland, NZL); the 23 year-old only began competing internationally last season and she has already secured a wildcard for the upcoming invite-only 5Star Burton High Fives (Snow Park, NZ, Aug 15th-18th).

Prior’s run included an air over the petrol tank, a boardslide onto the rail, a frontside rodeo 540, a cab 540, backside 360 and then a method air off the pole to finish. Prior achieved a mini milestone with her win, placing on the podium’s top spot ahead of experienced local Wanaka local and Qualifying winner Shelly Gotlieb (Wanaka, NZL).

Canadian Tyler Nicholson (CAN) managed what Tonteri hoped for by going back-to-back in the Men’s Junior division. The 17 year-old 2011 Bro Down winner was going to enter the Open Men’s but decided against it following seven months rehab off the snow, and instead won the Junior Men’s Division.

The Junior Women’s division was decided on Day 1 with Aussie Alex Fitch (AUS) placing first ahead of Biba Turnbull (AUS) and Kiwi Fiona Brunton (NZL).

The Billabong Bro Down presented by Xperia Sony Smartphone is the first southern Hemisphere stop on the 2012/13 World Snowboard Tour.

Welcome in the asphalt jungle !

For its 9th season, Volcom Stone’s Wild In The Parks 2012 is stopping in 15 jungles around Europe from Portugal to Finland.
In Switzerland, wild animals will gather on Saturday September 1st in Hitzkirch (LU) Skatepark (Rain date : Sunday September 2nd in Skatepark 4600 Olten).

Dispatched in heats of 8-12 skaters, all monkeys must shred the whole park, divided in 3 lines/zones, each one composed of several obstacles enabling a large variety of tricks. As usual, only landed tricks count, but not the fails ; so that everyone dares throwing big tricks while others go ape about the show. Best tricks of each line will thus decide who gets in finals and who gets to ride the bowl and enjoy the BBQ.
After the contest, the soundtrack will be a LIVE concert of Those Furious Flames !

Three divisions to choose from:
- 14 and under (and a surprise for 10 and under)
- 15 and over
- Open, with cash prizes
Like all Volcom events, you can leave your wallet home because this contest is entirely FREE : free entry, free T-shirt, free food, free drinks, free live concert and tons of prizes for all competitors !

As usual, the law of the jungle will determine the top 5 of each category who qualify to the European WITP Championships on the 6th of October in Spain, with a 6000€ prize purse, a spot to compete at the 2013 Amsterdamn Am and million more prizes to win.

Welcome in the asphalt jungle !

Gelungene Premiere der Iouri & The Kids Skate Tour Mit der Iouri & The Kids...

Gelungene Premiere der Iouri & The Kids Skate Tour
Mit der Iouri & The Kids Skate Tour zogen der Skate- und Snowboard-Pro Iouri Podladtchikov und seine Skate-Friends Monir Salihi und Timmey sowie der bekannte Szene-Fotograf Vernon Deck sieben Tage durch die sieben besten Schweizer Skateparks. Vom 8.-14.

Zufriedene Gesichter an allen sieben Tour-Stopps

Stephanie Gilmore claims 5th ASP Women’s World Title at Roxy Pro Biarritz Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24,...

Stephanie Gilmore claims 5th ASP Women’s World Title at Roxy Pro Biarritz

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, has claimed her 5th ASP Women’s World Title today, winning the Roxy Pro Biarritz over Tyler Wright(AUS), 18.

I woke up this morning and thought it wouldn’t happen today, Gilmore said. But as the day progressed, and things fell into place, I began to believe it could happen. France is such a special place and having so many people on the beach watching us surf today is really emotional. I think I’m going to cry.
Gilmore set an ASP record by being the first surfer ever to win four titles from four attempts (2007 – 2010), but fell back to ASP Women’s World No. 3 in 2011. Today’s emotional win is a reassertion of her dominance as one of the greatest icons in women’s sports.
This year for me was all about improving my consistency and having fun with my surfing, Gilmore said. From when I started five years ago to where we are now, women’s surfing has improved so much. It’s an honor to be back up top as these girls push me every day and are all incredible surfers.

Today’s incredible achievement puts the young natural-footer in an elite class of surfers to win five or more ASP World Titles, overtaking women’s records set by Freida Zamba (USA), Wendy Botha (AUS) and Lisa Andersen (USA). The only other two surfers in history to claim five or more titles are Kelly Slater (USA) and Layne Beachley (AUS).

Fellow finalist Wright put on an impressive display of surfing throughout the Roxy Pro Biarritz, besting Courtney Conlogue (USA), 19, and Coco Ho (HAW), 19, en route to today’s Finals. Unfortunately for Wright, her momentum didn’t transcend into the Final bout against Gilmore, but the tour sophomore was happy with her performance nonetheless.
I feel pretty good, Wright said. I was so excited for Steph (Gilmore). She was ahead of me the whole time and with five minutes to go I was like, ‘you’ve done it!’ It’s incredible – she ripped the whole contest and didn’t lose one heat, she was shredding!

Today’s Runner-Up finish at Grande Plage is a season best for Wright and vaults her from 5th to 3rd on the elite ASP Women’s World Championship Tour rankings.
I’m happy with how that season went, Wright said. I’m just enjoying myself! I feel it’s funner when I just messing around rather than be too serious. You know I love surfing and that’s about it.

Coco Ho (HAW) 21, was responsible for the biggest upset today when she defeated Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 21, in this morning’s Quarterfinals. Ho was later stopped by runner-up Tyler Wright in the semis, not able to find the highest scoring rides in a wind affected line-up. Finishing equal third in Biarritz, Ho confirms her newly found rythmn after a brilliant second place in the previous event in Brazil.
