Am vergangenen Samstag, 27. Juni fand im neu gestrichenen Bowl von Lugano die zweite Austragung des eintägigen Bowl Contests statt.
Obschon die Meteo-Gurus wechselhaftes bis schlechtes Wetter prognostizierten, verdeckte keine einzige Wolke den Himmel über dem Bowl und die Suche nach Sonnencrème stand an der Tagesordnung.
Gegen 13 Uhr herrschte reger Verkehr im Pool und der Grill lief auf Hochtouren. Rund um die Bowl standen Zuschauer, welche von den Fahrern das eine oder andere Mal weggewiesen werden mussten, sodass diese genügend Platz für ihre Tricks hatten.
In der Qualifikation hatten die 30 Fahrer je eineinhalb Minuten Zeit, ihr Können den Judges zu zeigen. Elf Fahrer aus der Schweiz, Österreich und England bestritten wenig später das Halbfinale, wo sich die Herren Cattaneo, Fardin, Blaser und Scott durchsetzten und im Finale standen.
Nun ging’s um die Wurst oder besser 4000 Franken Preisgeld! Dem ursprünglichen Zeitplan etwas voraus, startete kurz nach 18 Uhr das Finale, wo jeder der vier Fahrer zwei Runs à einer Minute hatte, um nochmals ihr bestes Skateboarden auszupacken. Kevin Blaser zeigte hohe, sichere Airs, Igor Fardin hob sich durch seine vielen Lib Tricks von den anderen ab, der erst 16-jährige Martino Cattaneo rollte trotz Schnittwunde am Fuss mit Hi-Speed durch die Bowl und verzierte diese mit Frontside und Backside Judos und Andrew Scott aus England trumpfte im tiefen Bowl mit Hand Plants de Luxe.
Schlussendlich war’s Andrew Scott, welcher vor Martino Cattaneo und Igor Fardin zu oberst auf dem Podest stand und nun 2000 Franken auf sein Bankkonto einzahlen darf. Stefan Moser aus Österreich zeigte den Best Trick mit einem Fs Crail Slide to Fakie und sahnte das begehrte Nixon Package ab.
Am Abend stand die berühmt, berüchtigte Toga Party in Taverne auf dem Programm, wo 500 verkleidete Römer und Römerinnen bis in die Morgenstunden tanzten.

Andrew Scott wins the Vans off the Bowl-Contest 2009
Last Saturday, June 27th the second edition of the Vans off the Bowl-Contest contest took place in the newly renovated skate park of Lugano (Switzerland).
Although the weather forecast was overcast and rain, we were surprised by sunshine and warm temperatures. Sun cream became very popular and needed by the end of the day.
By 1pm there were a lot of riders challenging the bowl and the grill was on fire. The area around the bowl got so crowded and riders had to advise fans and spectators to move from the coping so that they could show their tricks without hurting anybody.
In the qualifications each of the 30 riders had 90 seconds to show their best to the judges. Eleven riders from Switzerland, Austria and England qualified for the half finals. Martino Cattaneo, Igor Fardin, Kevin Blaser and Andrew Scott performed best and were the top four.
Neck or 4000 Swiss francs of price money? The finals started around 6pm, where each of the four riders got two runs of one minute to show their outstanding tricks. Kevin Blaser did very high and secure airs, Igor Fardin caught the judges’ eye with his technical Lib Tricks, the 16-year-old Martino Cattaneo rolled through the bowl with hi-speed and placed frontside and backside Judos everywhere and Andrew Scott elated the jury with some Hand Plants de luxe in the deep part of the bowl.
Andrew Scott from England won before Martino Cattaneo and Igor Fardin and could take home 2000 Swiss francs. Stefan Moser from Austria hit the best trick with a frontside Crail Slide to Fakie. He now owns a full Nixon package.
The exciting day ended with the famous Toga party in Taverne, where 500 Romans danced till dawn.
